Blood donation and typification

Dear students!

There will be another blood donation event this semester – in spite of the pandemic. The event will take place on 23.11.2021 in the Alando Ballroom. You can stop by to donate blood between 2:30 pm and 8 pm. Additionally, there will be the opportunity to register for stem cell donation.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the students who made their way to the OsnabrückHalle in the summer semester of 2021! Together we were able to collect a total of 203 donations, 112 of which came from first-time donors. That’s a new university record! Do you think we can break the record again this semester?

But why are blood donations so important?

Donated blood is used, for example, to treat severely ill patients or in the event of serious accidents. So for many, blood donations are essential for survival, and unfortunately, there is no artificial alternative. If too few blood donations are received in a period of about a week, patient care can no longer be guaranteed. Optimal care for the sick and injured is therefore no longer possible. Donations are therefore indispensable!

And why is stem cell donor typification so important?

The typification process serves to find suitable stem cell donors for all those patients who are waiting for a stem cell transplant. Doctors rely on stem cell therapy especially in cases of haematopoiesis disorders.

Blood donation, registration and corona? Does it work?

It actually works pretty well! Hygiene standards have always been high anyway. Please book an appointment for your donation in advance. This prevents long waits and queues, which in turn means that all safety standards can be maintained even better.

And who is allowed to donate?

That’s the great thing. Anyone who feels fit and healthy can donate! Those who show first symptoms (sore throat, chills, cough, shortness of breath) will be put on hold for four weeks and will therefore not be allowed to donate. Anyone with a body temperature above 38°C, anyone who has been in contact with someone who has Covid-19 or anyone who has had the disease themselves (in this case, you must wait at least four weeks after healing before donating) will also be deferred.
