Whether you are a die-hard football lover, a submarine fan or simply a passionate appraiser of sexy men’s bodies, for most Germans eleven days ago a mad time began. What could be better than being able to watch several games in just one day, finally checking the new TV for good screen quality (as a student you usually don’t get around to it because of all the work) and eating chips and beer in abundance?
Your answer is a lot? Then you’re probably going through a difficult time right now. What are you doing tonight when no one has time for you because everyone is busy cheering on the German national team? We have an idea for you. How about a relaxing walk up the Piesberg? It is certainly quiet there (there is no one but you to be there), you are in the fresh air, you save yourself a stuffy hour in the gym and if you are lucky and the weather cooperates, then a great view of Osnabrück and the surrounding area awaits you. Well, how about it?
What is the Piesberg?
The Piesberg is known to many only as a quarry and landfill (closed since 2005), but for some years it has been attracting many visitors every day. The reason for this is the large red unmissable observation tower with a walkable platform on the rock rib. Take a look at what you can see from here:
To get there, it’s best to take bus 581 or 582 in the direction of Wallenhorst via Pye and get off at the Industriemuseum stop. From there we continue on foot, along the old rails up the mountain.
What’s around it?
If you’ve ever been to the Piesberg or just wonder what else the Piesberg has to offer, then pay a visit to the sequoia. Well, it doesn’t appear in the “List of the thickest sewoods in Germany” on Wikipedia, but it’s still worth trying to “hug” it (if you can do it…:D). The sequia tree is located in the tree park on the Piesberg (Osnabrücker Straße 110), where you can also find other exotic tree species.
If you are not a football grouch, but are looking for a nice destination to relax and “clear your head” for the upcoming stressful exam phase, then a visit to the Piesberg is also a great idea. Just give it a try. 🙂
