Hello freshmen,
survived the first week well? Then it’s time to introduce you a little bit to a few basic things. Don’t worry, you’ll find your way around quickly. And if you don’t know what to do: You have chosen a very helpful university! 😉
First into the WLAN
Smartphone, tablet, notebook – all your gadgets have to go online first. With the right access data, this can also be done quite quickly. But which of all these Wi-Fi names should you choose? eduroam! Eduroam is an initiative in which all universities worldwide participate. Your advantage: once registered, you can access the web at all these universities. For example, if you go to Hamburg with the semester ticket, you can continue surfing there directly. And in the city of Osnabrück, at all the university’s Wi-Fi hotspots, as well. You can find a map of all locations in Germany here.
And how do you get in there? Simply click on “eduroam”, add @hs-osnabrueck.de to your university username (e.g. mmusterm) and enter your password. So mmusterm@hs-osnabrueck.de and not(!) max.mustermann@hs-osnabrueck.de. Detailed instructions for your device can be found here.
Coffee!
… is available 24/7 from 1.00€ at all machines in almost every university building. Especially often you see people with an “Irish cappuccino”. The latest model is in the SL building and rumor has it that you will soon even be able to draw coffee with the campus card in the new library.
Until 8:00 p.m. (Fridays 4:30 p.m.) there are also various coffee specialties between €0.90 and €1.90 in the Café Lounge am Westerberg, until 4:20 p.m. (Fridays 1:45 p.m.) in the Bistro Caprivi and until 4:15 p.m. (Fridays 2:30 p.m.) in the Mensa in Haste . If you bring your own cup, you save 10 cents.
Last but not least, your student councils also offer delicious coffee for a small contribution towards expenses. The opening hours are variable here. Just knock spontaneously.
… you can do best with your university friends. There is one printer each at the AStA am Westerberg and in Haste and at the student councils IuI, WiSo and AL. It is best to bring your files with you on a USB stick in PDF format. Payment is made in cash.
You can print via campus map at various locations in the university. Currently, the devices serve more as copiers and can also be fed via USB stick. However, in the last semester, study quality funds were able to finance software that allows printing from your notebook. However, it is not yet known when this software will be available.
#oscalation
Your friendship will not be easy, but OSCA and you, it will work out. OSCA is a little bitch, sometimes messy and of course never does what you want him to do. He’s also quite conservative, but he knows everything about you. OSCA is the central university portal. From application to exmatriculation, all processes are mapped in OSCA. This is already a very exemplary project and therefore one can forgive one or the other quirk for the time being. For you, OSCA is the entry point into your studies. Here you will find your timetable, your course content, enrolment certificates, your e-mails and the registration for your courses and exams. There is also a bulletin board and a job portal. Most of the time, an email forwarding is first set up in the settings. A detailed feature overview can be found here .
CampusCard
As you have already learned at the Imma celebration, you are always in the fast lane with the CampusCard in the cafeteria. You can also find the top-up machines for the mobile payment method in the libraries, among other places. You can use the CampusCard for printing as you have just learned, but it is also your semester ticket and library card. Some IuI students can even use it to open the doors of the SI building 24/7.
Ride the bus
The older generation keeps telling us: “In the past, there was still the tram here!” – and at the latest when you have sat in the trailer of line 21 against the direction of travel after a night of partying, you will eagerly wish for it again. But it’s not that bad. Yes, the buses are full, but most of the time the municipal utilities arrange supplementary buses quite quickly. Unfortunately, the display boards are (so far) as accurate as the Deutsche Bahn timetable, but mostly serve as a rough orientation.
And last but not least… Student
You may be wondering what this unwieldy term is all about: It’s the gender-neutral form of Student. After all, only the gentlemen of creation are addressed by student. Get used to it, because this topic is often placed directly behind world peace at universities. 😉 It can’t hurt to keep this in mind for your presentations, term papers, and theses.
With that in mind – enjoy it. In four weeks at the latest, you’ll feel like you’ve always lived here and as worn out as it sounds, you’ll tell your grandchildren that it was the best time of your life !
