The confirmations have been sent out, the enrolments have started, the university is back from the holidays… that can only mean one thing: the first-year students are coming!

And since almost all first-year students have a slight orientation weakness at first, we are rushing to your aid with this little guide. At first, our university seems to have far too many campuses and locations. But believe me, there is actually a structure!

Caprivi Campus and Westerberg Osnabrück Campus

If you are a student at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences (WiSo), the
Caprivi Campus
will be the most interesting for you. There you will find your direct representatives, the majority of your lecturers and many of your lecture rooms. The campus is located on Caprivistraße in Osnabrück, which is why all rooms/buildings have a “C” at the beginning.

But don’t worry, the
student council WiSo
organizes the famous O-Week for you, during which you will get to know the campus with all its rough edges. So you shouldn’t miss it at all !

Engineering and computer science also have a permanent place in Osnabrück – the
Campus am Westerberg
! The laboratories are piling up there like at no other location. By the way, the students of the
Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science
(IuI) can also 😉 the luxury of the large cafeteria for themselves.

Here it gets a little more complicated with the buildings, because some streets run through such a large campus. Most often, however, you will encounter the buildings with the letter “A”. This stands for Albrechtstraße. There you will find the Registrar’s Office, the Presidium (AF Building) and
us
(AE Building).

Then there is Sedanstraße. This has given the SI and SL buildings next to the Westerberg canteen their names. By the way, the SL building is also affectionately called “The Frog” in student circles. If you’re wondering why…. It’s best to take a look for yourself.

By the way, the brown building right at the intersection is a
library
! We share this together with the University of Osnabrück. You will spend some agonizing hours there, so make friends with her ;-).

By the way, for the IuI students among you, the
IuI student council
organizes the famous mountain festival! This always takes place on the first Friday of the two weeks of preparation (current: 13.09.2019). A great opportunity to meet new people and to get the first tips regarding the teachers.

The last location in Osnabrück is the
Institute of Music.
It gets really creative there, because all our musicians cavort there. By the way, the IfM can also be found on Caprivistraße. By the way, the
IfM student council
is always happy to invite you to a barbecue.

Campus Haste Osnabrück

On this small, green patch of earth, the world is still in order. There is a dreamlike perennial garden and the students of the
Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Landscape Architecture
sunbathe on the meadows. If you want to escape city life, this is the place for you.

To ensure that the red thread with the building names runs consistently, all buildings start with the letter “H”, which stands for Haste…. (I’m sure you’ll notice for yourself).

Here, the
AuL student council
regularly invites you to events. Just take a look at the semester planner.

Campus Lingen

Just under 50km from the rest of Osnabrück University of Applied Sciences, theatre education, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, business administration, electrical engineering and communication sciences are taught in the middle of an old railway repair shop. Take a look at the exciting architecture for yourself ;-).

Despite the distance, the students of the
Faculty of Management, Culture and Technology
are anything but inconspicuous. In addition to cool
concerts
and their own
Campus TV
, the individual institutes also strive to provide students with the best possible support. And we are proud to announce that the buildings all begin with the first letter “K”, which can be traced back to Kaiserstraße directly on campus. However, the “LK” building, in which the Institute of Dual Students is located, still exists.
In the student building “KH” you will also find the
AStA
on the Lingen campus, the campus shop and the MKT office, which regularly organises barbecues, parties, excursions, cinema evenings and much more. organized.

And now some information about the beginning of your studies

The new lease was signed, the new home was occupied, the enrollment was successful and now the matriculation ceremony is imminent. You have arrived in the seriousness of life! At least that’s what you thought – until all the information makes you seem as clueless by noon at the latest as when your parents pressed the school cone into your hand.

So the first beer on the Mensa forecourt is really helpful!

You can find all events organized by the committees in the semester planner or in the
event calendar
on
hochschulfreun.de
. You can get the semester planner at the enrollment ceremony or at the
AStA
, the student councils and in the
campus shops
(while stocks last).

Studying probably differs most from school in that you don’t just attend lectures and write exams, but use the free time for personal development, or should use it. Therefore, there are many different student committees, initiatives and associations. The range on our campus is wide and so everyone can find the right offer for them or start their own initiative. So take a look around or just ask us in the office.

What do the University Friends actually do?

The AStA is the
General Students’ Committee
at the university. We stand up for the interests of the students, organize events and university elections, sell learning utensils in the
campus shops
and are always there if you have any difficulties. We can be found in the student AE building directly opposite the Mensa am Westerberg. In Haste you will find us in the HE building and the people of Lingen simply drop by the KH building.

We will be happy to advise you on questions about BAföG, scholarships, equal opportunities or your semester ticket. You can also register with us for
car sharing
or rent the StudiBulli for your next move. In our offices, we also offer a printing service where you can print, bind and laminate. If you need an international student ID card (
ISIC),
you can also apply for one from us or pick up your lost house key at the lost property office;)

In the campus shops you can buy everything you need to study for little money: pens, pads or calculators, we have everything ready! You can find the opening hours for the shops at each location
here
!

Of course, we always provide a bit of leisure fun at the university. So that you have enough to keep busy in addition to the lectures, we organize the night watchman and freshman pub crawls, the university hype and whatever else we can think of. We are happy to receive ideas and suggestions.

The StuPa is the
student parliament
and, strictly speaking, the highest elected student body at the university. This is where really important decisions are made that affect every student.

The StuPa elects your direct representatives, i.e. the AStA officers, and keeps an eye on what is happening in the AStA. In addition, the StuPa decides, for example, on the composition of the semester ticket and makes financial decisions, such as the funding of projects and the composition of the student body’s budget. In addition, current higher education policy issues will be discussed.

The student councils are generally considered the party crews at the university. But they can do much more than just party! Each faculty has its own student council that takes care of the students. There are the student councils
Wiso
,
IuI
,
AuL
,
IfM
and
MKT
.

As the “mouthpiece” of the students, the student councils always have an open ear for complaints, suggestions and ideas on your part. So if you have any questions about studying, rooms at the university, living in Osnabrück or Lingen, our professors, the cafeteria or you just feel like a chat and coffee, the student councils are there for you!

But now we come to the exciting part of the student council work: The events! 😉 Of course, this includes the many legendary student parties, skiing and surfing camps, mulled wine and barbecue evenings, the university cinema, first-semester weekends and, of course, the program of the freshers’ weeks.

There are also many students who are involved in university projects . This also includes Campus without Borders, an exchange project between students and refugees that takes place in the lecture hall, on campus and in leisure time. The aim is to support refugees in their integration. This works best through exchange, friendship and participation. In addition, students organize exchange evenings, language meetings or simply a colorful party!

In addition to purely student committees, there are also university committees in which students can get involved!

Each of our four faculties has a
faculty council
, the Institute of Music has an institute council. The main focus is on structural and development plans, the modification or formation of faculty facilities, as well as study and examination regulations. We students are represented with two votes each and are allowed to have a say.

There are a lot
of commissions
at the university. You can think of them as small working groups that take care of different areas. The aim is always to improve study conditions. The study commission deals with the topics of teaching, studies or examinations. The Commission for
Study Quality Funds
deals with funding from the state that is available to the university to ensure and improve the quality of teaching and study conditions. The
appointment committees
decide which professors will teach at the university for the first time.

Phew, quite a lot at once, isn’t it?

Since almost everything revolves around politics at the moment anyway, we are also swinging the university politics club here! But let me tell you, even the “small” politics at our university are quite significant and can have a strong impact on your student life.

So make sure that you have a say in the decision! To do this, you can get involved yourself and
take on an office
. And for the record: THIS IS REALLY FUN! You wouldn’t believe what a crazy, good-humoured bunch is behind the committees 😉 In addition to a lot of knowledge about the university, you also get to know many new friends here!

Because of course not everyone can stir in the soup, it is all the more important to choose your representatives conscientiously. That’s why choosing a university is an absolute must for you in the winter semester! 🙂
